Stay Young - Dr. Oz Says YOU Can Turn Back the Clock by Knowing the Major Agers
83There is probably not one of us - who would not like to stay young... longer. Well, Dr. Mehmet Oz in his book YOU Staying Young is touting that if you want to stay young, then you need to know what the major agers are, and then manage each one of these areas in your own life - in order to stay young. You Staying Young is about how to turn back the clock of aging, and actually stay young for a longer time.
Dr. Oz says that some of the most important major agers that you must pay attention to, if you want to stay young are...
- A diet high in fat and sugar.
- Not getting enough exercise.
- Lack of sleep.
- Too much sun.
Are you guilty of either indulging in some of these major agers, or maybe not indulging enough in others? Well, don't panic, because according to Dr. Oz - if we really want to stay young - there is hope for the couch potato in many of us, or the night owl.... and even the sun worshipper - - to slow down the aging process.
Dr. Oz is a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, and just recently he talked to guest about his book, YOU Staying Young: The Owner's Manual For Extending Your Warranty. This article is a summary of what Dr. Oz discussed with Oprah, regarding aging well - on one of his most recent visits.

Stay Young by Turning Back the Clock
Even if you are currently failing in any one - or all of these four Major Agers - Dr. Oz claims in his book, YOU Staying Young - that it is still not a fatal situation. Apparently, you can begin to turn the clock back - today. Once you know the changes that you need to make, if applied - then in literally a mere three months - you can change your life-cap - from what it was going to be, to what it can and should be! That's huge.
Dr. Oz suggests, that his program requires two weeks to begin, because that is how long it takes our brains to shift - and start thinking about a new way of life and knowing how to stay young. In the book YOU Staying Young - Dr. Oz tells us that you can't just get rid of your bad habits if you want to stay young, but that you must replace those poor habits with new actions.
When Dr. Oz was asked about how to stay young - and specifically "What is the number one MAJOR Ager"? His simple, but bold response was - STRESS! But we shouldn't all get stressed out when hearing this, because there are some specific keys - to how we manage our stress, when can then affect if we stay young... longer.
Everyone has stress, and some stress is actually good for us... really! How we manage this stress, is the critical skill that must developed, if we want to stay young - longer.
Living well is a choice - that YOU can make for a more healthy life!

If You Want to Stay Young - Then You Must Learn How to Respond to Stress
We all have stress in our lives. Learning how to become more responsive to that stress, if we want to stay young - means learning how to actually deal with our problems - and even engage with them. You cannot ignore that which causes you stress and stay young. The key to staying young - is learning how to manage our inevitable stress. It is like saying to the big bad stress monster in the closet... bring it on dude!
Understanding how the body responds to stress - is the key to dealing with stress. Helping the body to manage stress will keep it much healthier... but you must involve yourself with this process. The body always has it's own antidote for handling stress - and Dr. Oz explains this in his book - You Staying Young.
When you find yourself in a highly stressful mode, this can overload your brain... literally. We breath faster, sweat more, and become anxious. Some of us even become irrational at times - when under too much stress. Many of us take medication to manage our stress... so we don't need to take responsibility for how we are responding. We let the meds take over...
However, there are things that can be done, which will help YOU stay young - if YOU are willing to take control - - that will then assist the brain with managing your stress in more healthy ways. Some people meditate, do yoga or pray, etc... to manage their lives in a more calming way - and these are just some of the ways that we can actually help ourselves.

We Can Help Our Brain to Think More Clear by Our Conscious Actions in Response to Stress
It is human nature to feel as though we can't change the way our lives make us feel or are... This is the victim mode, which causes a lot of depression in many people. This is simply a false state of being. It is how we respond to those things that happen to us and because of us - and the choices that we ourselves make in how to then respond - that can ultimately give us control over our own lives. Or at least as much as we are able to control. Knowing the difference is important.
It is the process of...
- Recognition
- Understanding
- Acting
According to how we choose to respond to a given situation or circumstance, is completely within our power to do so. We cannot control what other people do, nor that which is outside our ability to choose.
Therefore, if we desire to stay young and turn back the clock of aging - then learning how to manage our stress in healthy ways, is the key. Knowing and understanding that this is possible is empowering. When we use choice to manage our lives - we have much more peace.
Regulating our own stress in order to live well, has everything to do with not only taking care of ourselves mentally and spiritually, but also - physically. Dr. Oz has developed a 14-day plan which encompasses all of these facets of a healthy lifestyle. Change isn't always easy... especially as we age. Therefore, it is imperative that we educate ourselves in such a way - that we choose to make the necessary changes to improve our health.
The two-week plan that is laid out in detail - by Dr. Oz in his book, YOU Staying Young - will put you on the path of living longer and helping you to stay young not only at heart, but truly changing the aging process overall.
Here's to living longer and aging well!

Tips From Dr. Oz - Reducing Your Stress in Less that Thirty Seconds
Lick your lips and suck in some air... do you feel that cooling sensation. The lips are wet and then then get a little bit cold as you inhale. That cooling sensation is a calming effect on your body.
Now, open your mouth up wide - and insert a cork upright - between your teeth. (you all have a spare cork, right?) This causes you to first stretch your jaw muscles and then just relax them while the mouth is stretched wide open. Again, a calming effect on the body.
Now, don't laugh until you try some of these little exercises... because according to Dr. Oz - they can work in helping YOU to reduce the stress in your life.
You are probably going to need to read the book for yourself though, to really understand just why these wierd exercises actually do reduce stress and help you to stay young - longer?

YOU Stay Young - Your Daily YOU-Do List
As a reminder, always consult your doctor for medical advice and treatment before starting any program.
- Walk 30 minutes. If you can't walk 30 consecutive minutes at a rate that slightly elevates your heart rate, walk three times for 10 minutes. Buy a pedometer, so you can also note how many steps you take every day—the total number of steps you take everywhere, including to and from the bathroom, not just those taken during these 30 minutes. A good goal is 10,000 steps. But don't worry. As long as you get the 30 minutes, about 3,000 steps, you can gradually build to 10,000 a day.
- Floss and brush the teeth that you wish to keep. Or do it for the heart you wish to nurture, the wrinkles you wish to prevent or the erection or sexual satisfaction you wish to have.
- Drink several cups of green tea with your copious water intake.
- Take your pills. Specifically, these:
- Get into the habit of popping omega-3s in doses of either six walnuts or one gram of metabolically distilled omega-3 fatty acids about 30 minutes before lunch and again before dinner. Or have 4 ounces of non-fried non-shell fish a week.
- Take vitamin tablets by leaving them in a convenient location like your car or by your desk, so you're continuously reminded. Same goes for calcium supplements.
- If you are a woman over age 40 or a man over age 35, take two baby aspirin at breakfast—162 mg—with half a glass of warm water before and after. Get your doctor's approval first.
- Take 300 mg of co-enzyme Q10—purchased with a USP verified label—at breakfast and dinner.
- Sleep seven to eight hours a night. Starting with day one, adopt a sleep hygiene program that will help you sleep like a 19-year-old cat. About 15 minutes before bed, finish any must-do tasks still hanging (even if it's just making a list of what you need to do tomorrow, so you can avoid stress-related sleep problems), do any before-bed hygiene, and spend a few minutes doing breathing and meditation. If you have trouble falling asleep, avoid stimulatory acts before bed, like watching TV or working out. Sex, though stimulatory (we hope), is okay. And recommended.
- Meditate for five minutes at some point during the day. You'll work up to 15 minutes in future weeks. For some of you, meditation will take the form of prayer. The key is to search for a path that gives you comfort and offers an
opening to finding deeper meaning in life. In a world with more noise than a pre-school classroom, our brains and souls need moments of silence to re-charge, re-focus and become rejuvenated. Give yourself a chance to think through your spirituality.

I have 2 out of 4 (little sleep and too much sun). Does that mean I'll only age 50%? *smirk*
Thanks - this is good to know while I'm still young.
I gave this a thumb's up for sure. Well written and packed with helpful information for people of any age!
Great info Write-On! I know I don't get enough sleep (haven't in a long time) and I agree that it is a huge factor. I guess I need to work on that. :)
Good advice, write-on, both from you and Dr. Oz. Physical and emotional health are important no matter what your age and certainly can affect longevity--but in the long run no matter how many Omega3's we swallow or how often we meditate, we all are riding the same train--just a question of who arrives at the station first LOL
I know 40 year olds who think like 80 year olds and 80 year olds who think like 40 year olds. Having the courage to live instead of sitting on the sidelines of life is the key. The clock is running on all of us from the day we are born and there is no turning it back. It's not how long you live, it's how IMHO.
I take fish oil capsules and do yoga almost every day I prefer Green rooibos to green tea as it 50 times stronger then green tea Great hub full of great info .
Just had to reply, Write on:-)
Stress is absolutely much relieved by positive thought and positive actions and absolutely has a big impact on our overall health and well-being. That's probably one reason why the United States is down to number 27 in terms of longevity in the developed world. Japan and Iceland have the one and two slots. We are a very stressed out bunch and it probably affects our lifespan. Dr. Oz is right about that. On the other hand the French and the Italians swill down red wine and eat lots of fatty cheese and live longer than we do. Go figure!
Yes the medical evidence is in, but it is not quite as simple as Dr. Oz would have you think. It's not a simple bargain of do the right thing and you can turn back the clock. I eat well, exercise, take my vitamins and have a pretty stressfree life, don't drink or smoke-- I do it because it makes me feel better today not because I think it will turn back the clock. Carpe diem :-)
Did I also say that even though I don't like Dr. Oz much, I think this is an awesome hub that tackles a subject we can all relate to ? I give it a big thumbs up
I have been doing yoga for almost 2 years now I have a yoga dvd its called yoga chi gung where you do some Tai chi movements as well I actually wrote a hub about it its great it makes you strong feel relax and calm mind you you know you had a workout after yoga because you are useing every muscle in your body that dont normally get a work out but Tai chi and yoga are very good you you you can buy The Complete Yoga Class: by Gary Bromley that what I do at home its quite good and not that hard to do Hope that helps you out ?
sure I add you link to my yoga hub .
HI , I DO YOGA A LITTLE BIT SINCE I AM A PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED MALE . I REALLY APPRIACIATED THE POSE YOU GAVE IN YOUR HUB .
Write On,
I have to admit I don't watch Oprah, and I am not familiar with Oz on Oprah, but the suggestions you have written about just seem to be common sense to me. I believe that mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health all go hand in hand in "turning back the clock" or slowing down the aging process. Learning how to manage stress in your life is probably the million dollar answer, and I would bet it is different for everyone. For years doctors have suggested correct diet and exercise so I guess Dr. Mehmet Oz has just capitalized on it and made it a new anti-aging guide with his book, You, Staying Young.
Have you had a chance to read the book yet? When you do will you continue to let us know of other mysteries he unveils.
Thanks Write-On for writing this nice hub to remind us what is really important in order to stay young. I like your caption under the picture above, "to stay young means more than having just a pretty face...our hearts must stay young both physically and emotionally. You can see this in the eyes." And of course we need to say NO NO NO to stress!!! Many great points you give for us to follow here.
I have seen Dr. Oz on Oprah before but haven't read any of his books. Everyone always accuses me of being way younger than I am so maybe I don't need this book yet. Do you think it is more for an older demographic? (I'm 25). I'd like to be able to STAY YOUNG instead of having to try to "be young again" when I'm older. Some of his things that worry me about myself are not getting enough sleep and STRESS. Big problems for me, so I might need to be careful with that if I want to keep my youthful characteristics :)
I believe Dr. Oz must be a fan of Dr. Deepak Chopra! This sounds a great deal like Ageless Body, Timeless Mind! But you can never hear it too many times! It is sound and timeless advice, and you did a great job of conveying it! :) Thanks!
Hi Write On!
I love your hub, its current, hip and really helps people.
Can u report the success of your anti aging program? What Dr Oz says is true, up until the age 32 i looked around 25 years old, and my colleagues were surprised to hear that i was 32! However I saw aging and illness happen in really quickly in 1 year when i went through the worst stress of my entire life about 2 years ago, This has only truly been relieved this year, And now i am reversing the damage that was done, I have seen results with my general approach which has been to avoid stress like the plague but i am now being more proactive and incorporating ayurveda(think common sense instead of calling it ayurveda)lifestyle and activities into my regimen.
Basically i aim to incorporate all of the books suggestions and make a few custom modifications that will serve me well.. i intend to incorporate a few extra things from Ayurveda that are known rejuvenatives(panchakarma detox) and then the ayurveda longevity tonics., and also incorporate alternate day fasting or calorie restriction.
I will publish a Hub about my progress sometime soon, i will record BMI blood pressure etc throughout the first few weeks
Definitely a keeper.Love the tips.
Stress is necessary to some degree. It keeps our neurons firing. Kind of like becoming alert to danger. the problem comes when this stress is intense and continuous! I like to try and get in some exercise and tai chi when I can.
grea t hub. i will rate up and bookmark. I am a grandmom too. So some of this will come in handy. I would like to invite you to take a look at my hubs.
Good 'your daily do-list'.
...And I like to add *brushing your tongue* is also very important.
Thanks for the information.
What a great hub!
Stress is a state of mind... and we can choose how to respond

Informative and interesting hub. Dr. Oz, however, never met my 15 year old. She is what makes me old!! Haha.
